How to Take Your Clients With You When You Go Independent

Your clients are your business. Here is how to plan a move to your own suite, from reading your agreement to announcing the change and making the first visit easy.

How to Take Your Clients With You When You Go Independent

When you leave a salon to work for yourself, your clients are the business. Most of them follow the person, not the building, but only if you plan the move carefully. Here is how to make the switch without losing the people who keep your book full.

Start with your agreement

Before you tell anyone, reread anything you signed with your current salon. Look for non-compete, non-solicitation, or confidentiality clauses. Texas courts generally enforce non-competes only when they are reasonable in length, area, and scope, but the details matter. If your agreement has any of these clauses, a short consult with an employment attorney is money well spent.

Whatever your agreement says, do not copy or export the salon's client database or booking records. That information usually belongs to the salon.

Build your own channels now

The best time to build your own following is months before you move. Grow a professional Instagram or TikTok that shows your work, and invite clients to follow it. Clients who follow you there will see your news no matter where you work.

Get set up before you announce

Clients are more likely to follow when the next step is easy. Have these ready before you go public:

  • Your suite, with a move-in date you trust.
  • Online booking with your own link.
  • Your price list, deposit policy, and cancellation policy.
  • Your license and business basics in order. Our guide to starting a beauty business in Texas covers the essentials.

Announce it clearly and kindly

Make one clear public announcement on your own channels: where you are going, when you start, and how to book. Keep it positive. Clients notice how you talk about your old salon, and staying gracious protects your reputation.

Make the first visit easy

Send booked clients directions, parking details, and how to find your suite. Small touches like a welcome note or a first-visit add-on help clients feel good about the change, and make them more likely to recommend you.

Plan for some drop-off

Not every client will follow right away, and that is normal. Budget for a slower first month or two and keep a cushion for rent and supplies. Use our salon suite cost calculator to see how many clients a week you need to break even.
